Sam O. Ross, 83, of Batesville, passed away at home with family by his side on December 25, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma Elois Long and Jesse Theodore Ross, and his beloved dogs Betsy and Tracker.
Sam is survived by his wife Jean Hill-Ross of Batesville; his brother Larry Ross; his children Blake (Julie) Ross, Shea (Kelli) Ross, and Kelley da Paz; his stepsons Greg (Lisa) Hill and Britt (Gina) Hill; his twelve grandchildren Sophie Ross, Graham Ross, Peyton Ross, Cooper Ross, Hope Seitz, Holland Seitz, Morgan Hill, Abby Hill, Matthew Hill, Chloe Hill, Luke Hill, Lincoln Hill, and his great grandchild Haven Seitz.
Born on March 16, 1942, in Corinth, Mississippi, Sam spent most of his life working in the aggregate business. He had a passion for fishing, geology, quarrying, and worked on mining opportunities up until his passing. Known for his steady presence, quick wit, and deep curiosity about the world beneath his feet, Sam had a storyteller’s heart and could spend hours explaining rock formations with the same enthusiasm he brought to recounting a perfect day on the river.
Above all, Sam cherished his family. He found his greatest joy in time spent outdoors with his children and grandchildren—casting a line, sharing quiet conversations, or simply watching others discover the things he loved. His life was marked by hard work, persistence, and a genuine appreciation for both nature and people, values he passed on to the next generations.
Sam will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy lives on in the family he loved, the work he dedicated himself to, and the many stories that will continue to be told around dinner tables and riverbanks.
In keeping with his wishes, no funeral services will be held. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
